Police Chief Kakoma Kanganja has held a meeting with the opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.

The meeting held on January 25, 2016 discussed on how the police is applying the Public Order Act.
The Police assured Hichilema who was accompanied by some senior party officials that they will be allowed to exercise their freedom of movement and association provided they follow the law.

The Police later issued the following statement:

Statement on the meeting held with the UPND leadership
The Zambia Police Command this afternoon met the UPND President and Senior Party leadership after the latter raised concerns over the application of the Public Order Act. The meeting was fruitful and it was resolved that the Police will not stop the UPND from exercising their freedoms as long as they comply with the provisions of the law and observe peace and order during such meetings.

During the meeting, I took note of the concerns raised by UPND leadership and thanked them for promoting dialogue and encouraged them to feel free to engage the police command each time they had concerns.

The Zambia Police Service therefore wishes to assure all political parties that it will do everything within its powers to make sure that the Public Order Act is applied fairly and equally to all.
