Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) condemned the continued overstepping and interference into traditional leadership of the country by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

In a Press Release today the UPND has demanded the stop of harassment of the Bemba Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Sosala by President Michael Sata and his government.

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu has been shrouded with continued harassment by the president and his government. The standoff between the president and Chief Chitimukulu led to the resignation of former Defense Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba.

Mwamba resigned his cabinet position but remained a PF member of parliament for Kasama Central constituency.

The paramount chief has been subject of continued harassment by PF and in the last few days there have been threats to arrest him for masquerading as a chief.

The UPND says it recognizes Kanyata Sosala as the duly chosen Paramount Chief Chitimukulu as he was chosen to the throne through the Bemba tradition council.

“As UPND, we are fully aware that there are no disputes regarding the choice of Henry Kanyanta Sosala as the new Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba speaking people and government must never interfere in the people’s choice,” reads part of the UPND statement.

It continues further, “We in UPND want to recognize Mr. Sosala as the duly chosen Paramount Chief Chitimukulu and must be allowed to settle and serve his people and the people of Zambia”.
