UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says his government will be premised in the separation of powers and the independence of constitutional bodies.
He says the intention is to prevent the concentration of power on one person/ area and to provide for checks and balances in issues of governance.
He said under his government the executive will not interfere with the work of constitutional bodies like the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), but will let it work independently.
ACC was established by an Act of Parliament, as an autonomous body, mandated to investigate corruption cases.
“Our government will have no say in who does or doesn’t get investigated by the Anti Corruption Commission.
“The ACC will have complete autonomy,” he said.
Hichilema’s sentiments follows the recent statements by President Edgar Lungu, who made comments believed to be meant to intimidate and undermine the independence of ACC.
The President’s utterances were roundly condemned, with many saying Lungu should not undermine the authority of the constitutional body.
