Hands off FIC, HH tells Lungu

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has alleged that President Edgar Lungu dissolved the John Kasanda-led Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) board because it tried to fight corruption in his government.

Commenting on President Lungu’s decision to appoint a new FIC board led by George Siame, Hichilema says he hopes the president “will not extend his hands to the FIC Chief Executive Officer, Mary Chirwa”.

“We have noted with not much amusement the firing of the Financial Intelligence Center Board by the PF because this was expected especially that this institution like many other citizens tried to prevent the PF and Mr Edgar Lungu’s corruption,” Hichilema said.

“We sincerely hope that Mr Edgar Lungu will not extend his hands to the FIC Chief Executive Officer, Mary Chirwa Tshuma.

Hichilema adds: “FIC has so far proved to be one of the key institutions in combating Mr Lungu’s insatiable appetite for corruption and plunder of public resources.

“Hands off FIC, Mr Lungu. We stand with the institution.”

Meanwhile, the Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has advised the new board of the FIC to build on what the previous board did in exposing corruption.

TIZ president Reuben Lifuka says the FIC needs to remain independent as it executes its mandate.

In an interview with Phoenix News, Lifuka adds that now is not the time to take away what the previous board has built with regards to the fight against illicit financial activities.

The new FIC board consists of Siame, Mike Goma, Justice Prisca Matimba Nyambe, Pelagia Kalung and Regina Kasonde Mulenga.

One Response to Hands off FIC, HH tells Lungu

  1. Another brazen move by a completely, fundamentally corrupt government.
It will take more than a few opposition heads to complain. The PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA need to say enough is enough.
But are they? Not enough of them are. The rest either don’t care, too concerned about tribal nonsense or will pray about it.
