Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has urged President Edgar Lungu to stop wasting resources by traversing the country in the name of inspecting developmental projects which are not there.

And Hichilema commonly known as HH says President Lungu and his PF has been putting the blame on the UPND on the challenges the country is facing due to his poor leadership.

“We advise him to return to his office and get to work initiating much needed programmes to tackle inequality, empower women and youth, and revamp our ailing education system,” says HH in a statement made available to Zambian Eye.

President Lungu has been on a four-day work visit in Eastern and Muchinga provinces where he held a number of campaign rallies.

Below is HH’s statement:

Last weekend’s events where innocent participants in the Youth Day procession were attacked and dehumanised on the basis of being UPND were shocking and we continue to call for those responsible to be made to answer for their ghastly acts.

Nevertheless, we will not let such acts of intimidation and thuggery distract us in our quest to fight poverty in Zambia. In fact we must now double our efforts on this front because in many ways poverty feeds violence and instability.

Having tried to lay all our problems at the door of external factors, the PF have now lowered themselves further and are seeking to blame the UPND for everything from violence to mealie meal shortages, including the partial drought.

As President Lungu continues to spend his time and state resources traversing the country to inspect development projects that are not there, we advise him to return to his office and get to work initiating much needed programmes to tackle inequality, empower women and youth, and revamp our ailing education system.

Here are a few things we would like to ask President Lungu to do when he sits at his desk. First off, we suggest to President Lungu that he picks up the phone to Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja and order that those who instigated and perpetrated the violence during Youth Day be brought to book. This is very important, not only because crimes have been committed and justice must prevail, but also because peace and unity is absolutely essential if we are ever going to beat poverty and inequality.

Secondly, we suggest he urgently cuts waste and inefficiencies, such as bloated travel budgets, unnecessary ceremonial activities and bloated contracts. Thirdly, these savings must be deployed in areas where our citizens are struggling such as our students, schools, healthcare and basic water and sanitation services. Fourthly, reforms must be initiated and red tape cut to ease the burden on local enterprise for job creation. We are in a hurry to employ the over 4 million Zambians who do not have a decent job out there. Here long-term solutions must be put in motion, for example moves to reduce the cost of farming inputs to ensure higher productivity and better prices next season so that a lower cost of living becomes sustainable and government can re-allocate resources elsewhere.

We are fast becoming a nation focused on survival not success. This is the story of Zambia under the PF. Let us now prepare to start a new chapter.
