Chipolopolo Boys celebrate after scoring

Ronald ‘Sate-Sate’ Kampamba scored the only goal as Zambia exacted revenge on group winners Cape Verde in an AFCON qualification formality match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The Nkana FC forward struck in the 78th minute to ensure that the Chipolopolo ended their qualification campaign on 11 points, one less than their opponents who topped the group.

With qualification sealed after the 1-0 win against Mozambique, coach Honour Janza picked the same side that started in Maputo, knowing that maximum points would help in CAF seeding. The Blue Sharks on the other hand, were happy to field a weakened side having already qualified as group winners.

Zambia enjoyed the lion’s share of chances especially in the first half but lacked cutting edge in front of goal.

Striker Emmanuel Mayuka had Zambia’s first shot on goal in the 5th minute but Cape Verde goalkeeper Kevin Sousa saved the Southampton player’s effort with ease.

Playmaker Rainford Kalaba then teased the Blue Sharks goalkeeper in the 12th minute but his shot was rising.

The home side continued to press and Nathan Sinkala came close to breaking the deadlock when he struck the post with a thunderous long-range effort.

The 2012 champions finally got the goal their dominance deserved in the 78th minute when Mayuka found his strike partner Kampamba in acres of space and the young striker advanced on goal before coolly sidefooting past Sousa as the away side appealed in vain for offside.

This was Zambia’s third straight win without conceding a goal.
