Presidential election set for January 20

ecz-logoInterim President Guy Scott has announced that the country will hold the Presidential by-election on Tuesday January 20, 2015, reports Zambian Eye Correspondent.

The Presidential by-election has been necessitated following the death of President Michael Sata on October 28, 2014. The by-election will chose the successor to President Sata.

Dr. Scott says the announcement is in accordance with article 38 section one of the constitution of Zambia. He says the article states that if the Office of President becomes vacant by reason of the President’s death, an election to the office shall be held in within 90 days from the date of the office becoming vacant.

Speaking during a media briefing Tuesday afternoon, Dr Scott also thanked praised the general public for maturity, love and peace exhibited during the mourning period of late President Michael Sata.

Dr Scott also hopeful that the peace will continue even during campaigns and on January 20, the election day.

The ruling Patriotic Front is yet to pick a candidate for the election that is likely to be highly contested.

The opposition MMD by Tuesday evening were reported to have agreed to pick Rupiah Banda as the party candidate.
