There were violent scenes in Nakonde today over lockdown and starvation as people struggle to make ends meet.

Residents clashed with authorities this afternoon in the epicentre of the coronavirus, resulting in one person being shot and injured by police.

Since the lockdown, many people were finding hard to provide for their families as they could not go to work.

The lockdown also prevented people from making movements unless when extremely necessary.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time for riots to erupt in the border town. In 2010, violence also reared its ugly head.

The Nakonde border in Northern Province had to temporarily close following a riot that erupted leaving vehicles damaged.

The riot was started by Tanzanian traders conducting business on the Zambian side when a combined team of Nakonde council and Zambia police tried to move them from vending on an undesignated area.
