Lungu must rescind NDF resolution on mayors – Kang’ombe

Local Government Association of Zambia (LGAZ) President Christopher Kang’ombe has appealed to President Edgar Lungu to rescind the National Dialogue Forum (NDF) resolution on the election of Mayors and Council Chairpersons.

Kang’ombe who was expelled from the NDF for standing up against the move to revert to the old system where Mayors and Council Chairpersons were elected through Councillors, says his office will continue lobbying President Lungu and Members of Parliament to rescind the resolution made by the NDF.

In an interview with Journalists in Kitwe Kang’ombe hopes the proposed bill will not be passed in parliament and has again appealed to President Lungu to intervene.

The recently held NDF resolved that mayors and council chairpersons will be elected by councilors from among themselves, unlike the current system where they are elected by the electorate.

Kang’ombe who is also Kitwe mayor says mayors and council chairpersons elected by residents perform better as they understand the needs of the people that vote for them.
