ZESCO loses K1.6 million to vandalism

The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has lost 1.6 million due to vandalism in the first quarter of the current year, 2020.

The corporation revealed in a press statement to a local media house that it has registered a loss amounting to more than a million and a half Kwacha.

ZESCO Public Relations manager, Hazel Zulu, said they have recorded more than 260 cases of vandalism during the period under review.

She said most of the cases were from the Copperbelt, Southern, North-Western and Lusaka provinces.

Zulu added that 47 arrests were made, 12 convictions, with 41 cases active before the courts of law.

This disclosure by ZESCO come at a time the is struggling to generate enough electricity for the country.

This has been attributed to the diminishing water levels in Lake Kariba, amid antiquated power generation equipment.
