Zambia have won the COSAFA Cup for the seventh time after beating a determined Lesotho national team 1-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban, South Africa.

The Flames, beaten on post-match penalties at semi-final stage by Lesotho suffered more penalty heartache, losing 5-3 to South Africa in a third place play off earlier on the same venue.

Moyela Libamba scored Zambia’s all-important goal with a powerful header following a corner kick 12 minutes before the end of the match.

Zambia were beaten by Malawi in their first game during group stage in what turned out to be their only defeat at the tournament where they went on to win the next five matches against Comoros and Seychelles during the group stage, South Africa in the semi-finals before their win against Lesotho.

Malawi can be proud of the tournament they had. Despite finishing fourth, they are the only team not to have lost any match during regulation time, both their two defeats being on penalties.

South Africa also lost only a single match during the tournament, beaten by Zambia in the semis. They drew against Namibia during the group stage but beat Botswana and Eswatin to make it out of their group.

Zambia have now become the outright leaders to the COSAFA trophies table with 7. Zimbabwe are second with six trophies, followed by South Africa with five,

Malawi is yet to win its first, having twice been losing finalists to Zimbabwe and South Africa in 2002 and 2003.

Although Lesotho reached the finals, they won only two matches within 90 minutes. They lost two other matches and drew one (against Malawi) which they won on penalties.
