Unregistered Simcards cease operating

All unregistered simcards for mobile-phone will be disconnected by midnight January 31, 2014, Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority -ZICTA- has maintained.

A check by Zambian Eye at Arcades Airtel outlet  found a number of people registering their simcards as late as 9pm local time. While many registration points around the city were characterized by long queues.

ZICTA had extend the period from December 31, 2013 to January 31, 2013.

ZICTA Public Relations Manager Ngabo Nankonde told ZNBC News that the disconnected simcards will have two days to register and have their simcards re-connected.

Ms. Nankonde explained that all mobile operators have assured ZICTA that they will undertake a re-registration exercise for Simcards that were registered but will be accidentally dis-connected.

She said Simcards owners will have to show proof of having registered in the form of slips that mobile companies where giving out after one registers a simcard.

And Transport and Communications Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has stated that there will be no extension of simcard registration.

Mr. Mukanga has warned that all unregistered Simcards will cease to operate today.
