UN summit officially opens
United Nation Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesteday officially openned the UN’s first-ever summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants at the UN’s headquarters in New York on Monday.
Among the delegates and governments is Zambia’s Republican President Edgar Lungu with his entourage.
After a large refugee movements from all parts of the world to mostly USA and Europe, there have been months of negotiations over a planned joint declaration to have resulted in a document that has been criticized for being a mere summation of existing laws and principles on the handling of migrants and refugees.
But speaking when he co- chaired
a round table discussion with the President of Slovenia Borut Pahor on addressing drivers of migration, particularly large movements and highlighting the positive contribution of immigration, Lung said Zambia recognizes the challenges that come with refugees but added that there are benefits that come with refugees and other migrants.
According to a report by UN and obtained by Zambian Eye the original intent of having this duscussions is for the UN’s 193 member states to craft a more coordinated approach that protects the human rights of refugees and migrants, amid the largest movement of displaced people in Europe since the end of the Second War.
