Mealie meal price escalates to KR120

The price of Zambia’s main food has continued escalating with Sikongo, a district in the far west selling a 25Kg bag at KR120, more than double the normal price.

There are now fears in the Southern Africa country that hunger is looming as efforts to mitigate the shortages and prices by government seems not yield any results.

President Michael Sata and his PF government a few months ago directed that a 25Kg should not sell more than KR50. The president further threatened to place for price controls fearing that food shortages would result into protests.

Agriculture Minister Bob Schinga told Parliament on Wednesday March 6, 2013 that the country has enough maize grain attributing the shortages to high transport costs Millers incur to ferry the commodity.
