LCC joins Chipata Compound in clean up exercise

Lusaka City Council employees this morning joined Chipata Compound residents in cleaning their surroundings.

LCC employees were led by Town Clerk Alex Mwansa while residents were led by Raphael Chris Ward 22 Councillor Joseph Tamba.

The first place to be cleaned was Chipata Level One hospital surroundings before spreading to other areas.

Mr. Mwansa encouraged community members through their civic and community leaders to be mobilising themselves and resources every last Saturday of the month to clean up their surroundings.

He said council officials would only be going round to witness the cleaning activities and render technical assistance where it is needed.

“LCC has taken this approach to encourage community participation, ownership of the campaign and mindset change,” he explained.

Mr. Mwansa said community participation, ownership of the campaign and mindset change by residents was the only sure way of sustaining the campaign.

“In the past, residents had taken the campaign as the programme for Councils, a situation which led to past campaigns to fail,” observed Mr. Mwansa.

Apart from the cleaning exercise, Council Health Education Officers took advantage of the event to educate residents about the contents of the Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 12 of 2018 and other public health issues.

Today’s cleaning exercise was not only restricted to Chipata Compound as Councillors across all the 33 wards of the city mobilised residents to clean their surroundings.
