Lungu and HH

President Hakainde Hichilema (HH) has reached out to his predecessor Edgar Lungu over the funeral of fourth president Rupiah Banda, reports Asa Manda.

Fourth president Rupiah Banda died on Friday, March 11, 2022 at his home aged 85. He had been battling with colon cancer since 2020.

President Hichilema who visited the funeral House this afternoon revealed that he had spoken to Lungu that they mourn president Banda together.

He explained that he has also instructed the team from government to ensure they brief president Lungu on all funeral proceedings.

“”I phoned (former) President ECL (Edgar Chagwa Lungu). I have asked President Lungu that we mourn President Rupiah Banda. I have asked my team to be briefing him of all the programs,” President Hichilema disclosed this in the presence of widow and former First Lady Thandiwe Banda.

State House sources told Zambian Eye that President Hichilema telephoned former president Lungu on Friday.

The duo – Hichilema said Lungu were arch rivals following a disputed election of the later in 2016.

The rivalry saw President Lungu’s administration throw Hichilema in prison for 127 days in a trumped up treason charge. That was after Hichilema’s convoy obstructed President Lungu’s presidential motorcade in Mongu.

Hichilema whose case was later dropped following interventions by Commonwealth refused to recognize Lungu’s presidency through out his term.

He only addressed him as President after he conceded defeat in the August 2021 elections after the two were brought together by president Banda.

Lungu now remains the only former president following the death of Banda.

Zambia has lost two sitting presidents – Levy Mwanawasa in 2008 and Michael Sata in 2015. Three former presidents – Frederick Chiluba in 2011, Kenneth Kaunda in 2021 and now Rupiah Banda.

President Hichilema is the seventh president of Zambia since 1964 when the country got independence from Britain.
