UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has sent a message of condolences to President Edgar Lungu and his family following the death of his aunt, Mainess Lungu.

Ms Lungu, who died on Monday at the age of 96, was laid to rest yesterday at M’kwama village in Senior Chief Kalindawelo’s Chiefdom in Petauke district, Eastern Province.

In the evening, Hichilema took to social to send a touching message to his political arch-rival.

“We commiserate with the Lungu family on the untimely death of @EdgarCLungu’s Aunt, our mother, Mainess Mwami Lungu who was put to rest today in Petauke. We wish the Lungu family God’s strength in this trying moment. May the soul of our departed mother rest in peace,” Hichilema tweeted.

President Lungu was among several mourners that gathered at M’kwama village in Petauketo to attend the funeral and burial ceremony for his late aunt.

Ms Lungu, who was until her death the only surviving aunt for the Head of State, died on Monday September 16, 2019 at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), aged 96.
