Hate for Tongas has killed Farmers Union

ZNFU President Evelyn Nguleka

Allow me to express my disappointment with what is happening at the Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU). The union is on a death bed, it’s actually dead. All that is remaining is a shell of what it used to be. Staff have gone for a number of months without salaries and there is a backlog of unpaid debt owed to suppliers of goods and services, as well as gratuities owed to employees whose contracts expired.
It is unfortunate that the general public were made to believe that there was massive funds embezzlement at ZNFU by suspended CEO – Ndambo Ndambo and the late ZNFU president Dr. Evelyn Nguleka but that is far from the truth.
The truth of the matter, which the general public are not aware of, is that there is tribal purging at ZNFU just like in government departments. Tonga staff and to some extent Lozis are being hounded out of the institution.
Ndambo’s deputy, Ellah Chembe, and one of the senior managers at ZNFU, Florence Phiri, started scheming against Ndambo way before the audits at ZNFU were conducted. These two staff working with former ZNFU executive director, Edward S Zyambo, some board members and some donors decided they had seen enough of Ndambo and wanted him out. And now that Ndambo was suspended they have gone flat out hounding out all those perceived to be Ndambo’s allies.
Ndambo promoted the 2 female staff to top management positions even when they didn’t deserve it but they turned around and ‘stabbed him in the back.’ All the negative reports in the Daily Nation Newspaper against Ndambo and the former ZNFU 1st Vice President Richard Lisimba, who acted as president following the resignation of Dr. Nguleka, were a creation of these two evil and tribal women who are currently leading the ZNFU. The 2 worked with Richard Sakala of the daily nation to portray a picture that Ndambo employed his fellow Tongas and that they dominate the institution. Everyone knows that Richard Sakala is a damn wako-ni-wako tribalist and anything against Tongas is music to his ears, so he agreed to publish the lies.
The lies in the Daily Nation led to the rejection of Lisimba when he contested to be President at the ZNFU annual congress held last year and farmers re-elected Jervis Zimba instead. Jervis Zimba has also been hoodwinked into believing that staff from Ndambo’s tribe (Tongas) are against him. So he has also fallen for the idea that Ellah Chembe and Florence Phiri should lead the institution.
Ellah Chembe is an economist with very little agricultural knowhow while Florence Phiri has a mere certificate in nutrition, but these are the people who are currently heading the ZNFU after Ndambo got suspended.
You will realise that this is a cartel of people from Eastern Province who wanted Ndambo out so that they could install themselves as ZNFU bosses and they have achieved it. Staff who hail from Southern Province and are perceived to be Ndambo’s sympathisers have either been hounded out or frustrated to the extent that they have left the institution on their own.
The ZNFU has been the most organised and most successful farmers body in the whole of Africa since the late 90s but it is now certainly headed for total collapse. Having been a member and witnessing the Union grow since the late 90s, It hurts to see what has happened to the once mighty Farmers’ Union.

  1. It is undeniable fact that the source of hatred for tongas in Zambia is the ruling party PF politicians! The ruling party policians of former president kaunda’s policians, managed to create love between tribes. No opposition party which is not in power can have such influence on people. Mr Edger Chagwa Lungu, influence people to break this hatred in the same way you influenced people to vote for you! This hatred for tongas is not a sign of good governance.

    • Remember that Munkombwe muselela kwakaba started it by saying”IT IS HIGH TIME A TONGA RULED THIS COUNTRY”. If anything our Tonga brothers(seniors) cause such to come up. Leave dirt tribalists alone for they are underdogs.

    • @ Masinga Khumalo, I totally agree with you about the tribalism of the Nyanjas especially Richard Sakala. I once worked with his brother called Richard Ngulube. Ohhh, he was a terrible tribalist also. May he rest peacefully. He even recruited such big guys like Ali Simbule to cause havoc in that government Ministry where i worked with both of them until Ngulube was arrested for drug trafficking, Mandrax to be specific. That family is very very tribal. Ain’t you suprised why today Chipata is a city when there are towns, like Luanshya, Kabwe which are bigger than Chipata and yet they have been ignored? Nyanjas are very tribalistic.

      • The writer of the article is good at mentioning names. Why is he not mentioning the numerous Tongas who have been victimized due their tribe? The issue at ZNFU was triggered by Donors who had frozen their support to the institution because of rampant misuse of funds. The Donors cannot be misled by anybody if their funds are well accounted for. This business of crying imaginary tribalism will take this country no where. It started in UPND when electing HH as leader of the party. The position was ring fenced for only Tongas to the extent that a Lozi by name of Sakwiba Sikota who should have been leader was thrown out.Did Masinga Khumalo complain?

  2. If It Were The True Picture Of What Is Obtaining At ZNFU, then its very sad. it is even more sad that tribal bigotry is now being regarded as normal, thanks To the PF Government Who Are Shamelesly Promoting Ethnic Hedgemony. You See, I Have Always Bemorned The Death Of LPM. After That, We Have Had Unworthy Characters, Quacks Masquerading As Leaders. Back To ZNFU, Dont Worry My Brother. I Know And Have Dealt With Jervis Zimba. He Is A Gentleman Through And Through Whnm I Think Is Above Board And Will Do Correct Things For The Farmers, Being A Farmer Himself And An Intellectual At The Same Time

  3. This ugly head of tribalism will eventually degenerate into ethnic wars.
I wonder what criteria was used to qualify Chipata Municipal Council to a city ahead of Kabwe and Luanshya

  4. This is very dangerous writing. It reminds me of the Zambian Watchdog (R.I.P). I was addicted to it but i knew that it was a very dangerous publication which was full of divisive articles like this one. NONSENSE!!!

  5. This tribal agenda was peddled by Fred M’mebe through the post newspaper. To favor or promote a tribes-mate is better tribalism than calling an entire tribal grouping as BANTUSTANS, which the post did. Thank God, no Tonga threw a stone at M’membe and the very pie he used to enjoy chewing is choking him as we discuss. The more someone is hate without a reason the more they are BLESSED! IN LIFE HATE DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE!

  6. I would like hear from the two sides of the story , what will the other side say about the same issue are you sure they have no story to tell, Zambians need to love one another and not to point fingers.
All Zambians must be given same chances ,no one should be a victim or is it preconceived thought that because of this then must be that.
People can be entitled to their own opinion .

  10. The allegations about theft at ZNFU were not started by the government but by donors from Sweden and Denmark. This was after an audit was done. ZNFU is heavily funded by foreign donors who have the interest of farmers. These donors want to see their money put to Good use. The writer of the article is bringing in issues of tribalism to divert attention from what really happened at ZNFU. Some findings of the audit were made public. The writer should have gotten hold of the report which was issued by the donors.

  11. Whatever is the case, it still remains undeniable fact that FP government has been using “preach of hatred against tongas as a compaign strategy” in all previous elections. I had heard it myself during larries pf politicians shoulting “bushe kuti mwatekwa naba tonga baishiba fye ukuchema ingombe” this pf government has created the hate we see against tongas. Mukombwe is not the president of pf to be obeyed, its lungu edgar chagwa who devised this evil compaign strategy, full stop.

  12. Ladies and Gentlemen, tribalism that the writer and many of us as bloggers are putting across is evil like cancer. My appeal to our colleagues from various tribes never to promote tribal and this scenario is not health for our country. Mind you, Zambia has about 73 tribes and finger pointing will not help us. As for politics, I would propose to go back to one party participatory democracy, and somehow, we were better off with that system. The writer should have advised Com. Dambo Dambo not to engage himself in whatever situation he was found. We should all condemn a wrong to be a wrong. Because of tribal talking, bloggers are even condemning something good like turning Chipata Municipal to a city. This tribal thinking will not help us as a nation.
