Govt acts on higher mealie meal prices

Government has finally acted to cushion the prevailing high mealie meal prices in Zambia.

Ministry of Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa says government has reached an agreement on mealie meal.

Mweetwa says starting Sunday, 15th October, 2023 after taking into consideration all expenses on the commodity production, 25kg breakfast will be selling at K230 and 25kg roller meal will be going for K190 at all Shoprite stores across the country.

He says from Zambia National Service (ZNS) Depot across the country 25kg Breakfast will sale at K220 while a 25kg Roller meal should be sold at K180.

Mweetwa has urged Zambians across the country not to panic buying saying enough commodity was being produced daily to sustain the price and availability.

He has also cautioned against reselling of the mealie meal.

He was speaking at a media briefing held in Lusaka today.

Mealie meal prices skyrocketed from an average of K150 per 25 kg bag of breakfast in 2021 to over K300 in some outlets across the country.

The high prices of mealie meal have agitated a lot Zambians whose the commodity is a staple food.
