EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann dies suddenly in Harare
The European Union Delegation to Zimbabwe has announced the sudden and unexpected passing of H.E. Ms Katrin Hagemann, Ambassador of the European Union to Zimbabwe, on 3 September 2026.
In a statement, the delegation said Hagemann passed away on 3 September 2026. Her death was described as “sudden and unexpected.”
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected passing of H.E. Ms Katrin Hagemann, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Zimbabwe, on 3 September 2026,” the statement read.
The EU extended “heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues and all those who mourn this profound loss.” Citing respect for the family’s privacy, the delegation said “there will be no further comments at this time.”
The cause of her death has not been disclosed yet, but according to media reports citing diplomatic sources, Hagemann had reportedly been unwell.
She was found unresponsive when her driver arrived to collect her for work.
Hagemann served as the EU’s top envoy to Zimbabwe during a period of renewed engagement between Brussels and Harare.
The 27-member bloc is one of Zimbabwe’s largest trading partners and a major donor in health, agriculture, humanitarian aid and governance programs.
She had previously held senior EU diplomatic posts in Southern Africa. From 2015 to 2019 she headed the Political Section of the EU Delegation to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community. In 2019 she was appointed Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Kenya before her posting to Harare.
In Zimbabwe, Hagemann publicly linked stronger EU trade and investment to progress on economic reforms, debt arrears clearance and governance. She also spoke out on issues including civic space and anti-corruption, saying the country’s reform agenda would be key to unlocking international finance.
The EU Delegation said a Book of Condolences will be open to the public from Monday, 7 September to Thursday, 10 September 2026, daily between 10:00 and 16:00, at the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe in Harare.
Meanwhile, messages of condolences have started coming in following the diplomat’s passing on with The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Zimbabwe paying tribute.
“The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Zimbabwe has learnt with sorrow of the passing on of the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Zimbabwe, Her Excellency, Ms. Katrin Hagemann, yesterday the 3rd of September 2026.
“In her short time here in Zimbabwe, Ms. Hagemann demonstrated a commitment to continued cooperation between Zimbabwe and the European Union as well as to supporting the principles of democracy.
“We join her loved ones, friends, colleagues, the diplomatic community, and the nation of Zimbabwe in mourning and extend our condolences to her family at this sad time,” said the Embassy in a statement.
The Zimbabwe Agricultural Development Trust also sent its message:
“ZADT extends its deepest condolences on the passing of H.E. Ms Katrin Hagemann, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Zimbabwe.
“We are deeply saddened by this unexpected loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues and the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe.
“We honour her service and contribution to strengthening cooperation and development partnerships between the European Union and Zimbabwe. Our thoughts are with all those mourning this profound loss. May her soul rest in peace.”
