Esther Lungu, four others plead not guilty

Former President Edgar Lungu with his wife Esther Lungu today at Magistrate’s Court

Former First Lady Esther Lungu and four others have pleaded not guilty to charges of alleged theft of motor vehicles and certificate of title.

Esther is in this matter jointly charged with James Phiri, a police officer of Obama, Lee Chisulo, a police officer of New Chilenje , Catherine Banda and Kapambwe Lungu.

It has been alleged that between August 9, 2021 and September 30, 2022, Esther and four others stole a car, namely Mitsubishi canter registration number BAV 5282, valued at K 320,000, the property of Elizabeth Phiri, her niece.

In count two, it has been alleged that between the aforementioned dates, the accused people stole a Toyota Runx Registration number BLA 9772, valued at K 110,000 , also the property of Ms. Phiri.

In the third and forth count, allegations are that between the same dates, the accused stole a Toyota Alex registration number BAV 3986, valued at K 110,000, property of Furhana Patel and a certificate of title relating to stand number S/LUSAKA/333/2977 situated in Libala , Lusaka Water Works area, valued at K 1,050,000, the property of Phiri.

Lusaka Magistrate Mbuvyana Sinvula has set October 27, 2023 as date for trial.
