A couple in Chama District has died after allegedly drinking a pesticide following a marital dispute over their inability to have children.

Robert Chabinga, 28, and his wife Busy Kachali, 20, were found dead at their home in Dungulungu village in Chama district on 2nd October, 2023.

The police said they received a report of suicide from Chabinga’s father, Patson Chabinga, who lives in the same village.

According to the police statement, the couple got married in 2017 and had been having marital problems since then.

Chabinga was reportedly unhappy that his wife was not giving him children and accused her of being infertile.

The police said Kachali took an unknown pesticide after having an argument with her husband on the same issue.

She was taken to Dungulungu Rural Health Centre for treatment, but later died.

While she was being rushed to the health centre, her husband also took the same pesticide and died shortly after.

The police said the two bodies have been taken to Chama District Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The police commissioner for Muchinga province, Paul Achiume, has confirmed the report that both the police and the relatives of the deceased do not suspect any foul play in the incident.
