ECZ vice chairperson Nhekairo dies

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) vice chairperson Annette Chirumba Nhekairo has died.

She died this morning at University Teaching Hospital after an illness.

Nhekairo was an advocate of the High Court and Supreme Court of Zambia, a member of the Law Society of Zambia and the International Bar Association.

Announcing her passing on the Commission said: “It is with great sadness that the Commission wishes to inform all stakeholders and the public at large of the passing of its vice chairperson this morning at the University Teaching Hospital after an illness.”

Nhekairo worked as state advocate from 1980 to 1986, after admission to the Bar in 1981. She then joined the Zambia Post and Telecommunications private limited in various portfolios and rose to the position of company Secretary/ legal counsel.

She also worked for Zambia Law Department Commission as Chief Executive Officer until 2015.

Nhekairo was appointed the ECZ vice chairperson on 6 April 2018, the position she held until her death.

The Commission said her death is not a loss to the family alone, but the ECZ as well and the nation at large.

ECZ wished her family to be comforted by the Lord during this tough time.
