Chipolopolo coach Sven Vandenbroek has talked up the importance of today’s international friendly match against Gabon in preparation for the October 10 Afcon qualifier against Guinea Bissau.

And Vandenbroek is confident that winless Zambia will qualify to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations despite the 1-1 draw with Namibia on Saturday.

Zambia plays the Panthers of Gabon today with Vandenbroek fielding a strong side with the exception of the TP Mazembe trio of Rainford Kalaba, Kabaso Chongo and Nathan Sinkala who have been released for their CAF Champions League duty on Saturday.

First choice diver Kennedy Mweene who is also the team captain will miss the tie due to injury while Augustine Mulenga has been released on a happier note to reunite with his newly born child and his wife.

Talking to, Vandenbroek says the friendly would give him an opportunity to have an all-round assessment of his squad members that did not play on Saturday.

“The friendly game is partly important because I want to see and play some new faces and see if they picked up the principles from last week and if we can build with them also on a longer term,” he said.
“You want to see how the new faces can fit in the total plan and if we can keep them, maybe we can use them in future instead of being a sub.”

He said that Gabon tie would help him build up for the match against Guinea.

“The appetite to go to the AFCON is here. I think the October game is crucial and I am almost sure that what we did in training was a start,” he said.
“Unfortunately we play on a Wednesday against Guinea, It does not give much time to prepare but we will continue in this way.”

He added: “But even if we drew on Saturday I am still convinced that qualifying is possible and not even possible but we will manage.”

Vandenbroek also hailed the impact of the substitutes in Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup qualifies that saw Justin Shonga, Enock Mwepu and Lubambo Musonda almost turn the tie on its head to rally from a goal down to 1-1.

“The substitutes did very well, I always know that everyone is your friend until the moment you make your best team, there are always some guys unhappy and I understand because I was a player,” he said.
“But they were not disappointed the moment they came in, they just added some more power that gave us the extra step to equalise so that was also a perfect move of the total list to keep on playing for the team.”

Zambi plays Gabon in Libreville with the match kicking off at 18:00 hours Zambian time.
The match is being played on the FIFA International Day.
