Botswana former President fly to see sick RB

The office of Zambia’s Fourth president Rupiah Banda (RB) announced this in a press release below.

A few weeks ago president Hakainde Hichilema visited former president Banda as he is reported to not have been well.

Banda and immediate former president Edgar Lungu are the only surviving former presidents of the seven.

The country lost two sitting presidents Levy Mwanawasa in 2008. He died in France after suffering heart attack while attending a summit in Egypt. He was evacuated to France where he died from a Military hospital.

President Michael Sata died three and half years in office in 2015 from London where he had been taken for medication.

The other two Frederick Chiluba second president and Kenneth Kaunda died while they had left office. Chiluba in 2011 and Dr Kaunda in 2021.


The office of the Fourth Republican President, His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Bwezani Banda, informs the nation that, His Excellency, Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, Former President of the Republic of Botswana, was in the country on a private visit, from Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th January, 2022.

The purpose of President Khama’s visit, was primarily to see his brother, Former President Rupiah Banda, and to encourage and wish him a quick recovery.

While in the country, meanwhile, Lt. General Khama, paid a curtesy call on, His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema at State House, and also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Honourable Stanley Kakubo when the minister paid a curtesy call on him.

His Excellency, President Khama, whose family, beginning with the late Founding President of Botswana, His Excellency, Sir Seretse Khama are long-time family friends of the late Founding President of Zambia, His excellency Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, had occasion to visit the Kaunda family, represented by Dr. Kaunda’s eldest son, Colonel Panji Kaunda to pay his respects and commiserate with the family.

The Kaunda family have recently suffered the tragic loss of Mr. Kambarage Kaunda, the twin last born son of Dr. Kaunda.

His Excellency, President Banda, for his part, greatly appreciates and cherishes the visit as a gesture of true friendship and goodwill by his brother, His Excellency, the Former President of Botswana, Lt. General Seretse Khama Ian Khama.
