Zambia Balances Youth Priorities, Economic Realities

The Zambian government is taking decisive steps to realign its budget, leading to substantial reductions in grants to sports associations, reports Zambian Eye Correspondent.

Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe revealed that the Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts is implementing austerity measures in light of President Hakainde Hichilema’s declaration of the 2023/24 farming season as a national disaster.

While emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting sports, arts, and recreation, Chileshe acknowledged the necessity of budget adjustments. He asserted that the ministry is scrutinizing planned activities and international engagements to prioritize essential areas within the current constraints.

The anticipated reduction in sports association grants, which averaged K550,000 each, underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing fiscal challenges while maintaining support for vital sectors.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders await further developments, confident that the ministry will navigate these challenges in pursuit of national development objectives.
