Police has been put on alert following anticipated protests on the Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces.

Police Chief Kanganja Kakoma has confirmed the development saying the security wing has received information that some groupings are planning for protests demanding for the reopening of the Copperbelt University.

Kanganja in a statement availed to Zambian Eye has warned those planning to protest that police would sternly deal with them.

STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE

AS POLICE, WE HAVE INFORMATION THAT SOME GROUPINGS ON THE COPPERBELT ARE PLANNING TO STAGE A PROTEST WITH REGARD TO RE-OPENING OF THE COPPERBELT UNIVERSITY.

I THEREFORE URGE ALL THOSE INVOLVED TO ENSURE THAT THEY ADHERE TO THE PROVISIONS OF PIECES OF LEGISLATION WHICH GUIDE ON PUBLIC CONDUCT AND ACTIVITIES.

POLICE WILL NOT ENTERTAIN ANYTHING THAT IS GOING TO BE DONE OUTSIDE WHAT THE LAW PROVIDES FOR.

POLICE OFFICERS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON HIGH ALERT TO STERNLY DEAL WITH ANY SITUATION OR CONDUCT THAT WILL BE DONE OUTSIDE THE CONFINES OF THE LAW.

IN THE SAME VEIN, I AM REMINDING THOSE ORGANISING THE YELLOW CARD PROTEST AT PARLIAMENT TO ENSURE THAT LAW AND ORDER IS MANTAINED DURING THEIR PROTEST AND SHOULD STICK TO THEIR ASSURANCE TO THE POLICE THAT THEY WILL CONDUCT THEMSELVES PEACEFULLY DURING THEIR PROTEST.

ANY CONTRARY CONDUCT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. FURTHER, I ADVISE THOSE WITH CONTRARY VIEWS TO AVOID ANY ACTS LIKELY TO CAUSE MAYHEM.
