Mozambican Parliament is planning to introduce a bill seeking to legitimise polygamy.

This comes after a parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights and Legality went around the country to collect peoples’ views over the matter.

The chairman of the Committee, Mr Teodoro Waty, said any person who wished to marry more than one spouse should not be criminalised.

“The intention is not to encourage polygamy but it is reasonable to recognise the diversity of social concepts since the practice is popular among certain ethnic groups in Mozambique,” Mr Waty said.
Even though many ethnic groups in Mozambique still practice polygamy, the law prohibits legal recognition of such unions.

The practice of polygamy has drawn criticism from HIV/Aids activists in a region with one of the highest infection rates in the world.
