A suspected criminal identified as Comrade Hamooya of Mwanachingwala area in Batoka has been beaten to death by an angry mob while another is on the run after the duo broke into a house and stole cash amounting to K15, 000 at gun point.

The incident happened yesterday around 01:00 hours when the two suspected criminals broke into a dwelling house and stole K15,000 cash and a cell phone worth K120 at gun point.

Acting Police Spokesperson Danny Mwale said upon gaining entry into the house, the suspects fired one gunshot in the air before beating up a woman identified as Juvister Mosopo aged 30 years and went away with the items.

“Mosopo’s husband was at a funeral house in the neighbourhood. As the suspected robbers left the house, the victim screamed for help alerting mourners who pursued them and managed to apprehend one identified as Comrade Hamooya,” Mwale said.

Mwale said after being caught the suspect was beaten and sustained a deep cut on the head and multiple cuts on the body.

He said the suspect was rescued by other members of the community but later died on the way to Batoka Clinic at about 04:00 hours.

He said his body has been taken to Choma General Hospital Mortuary awaiting post-mortem while the injured woman is receiving treatment at Batoka Clinic.

And Mwale said the other suspect who managed to escape went away with the money and a phone and that a manhunt has been launched.

Mwale also said that police have since recovered a homemade pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.
