Malawi’s New President to wed

Maseko and Mutharika

Love and marriage is in the air for newly elected Malawian President Peter Mutharika. In a brief statement issued by the presidency it said:

“The State House is pleased to inform all Malawians about the traditional wedding of His Excellency State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to his long time best friend and confidant Madam Gertrude Hendrina Maseko.

A private ceremony to bless the wedding will take place on Saturday 21st June, 2014 at St Michaels and All Angels CCAP Church in Blantyre. Thereafter a family reception will be held in the village, at the Mutharika family home at Ndata farm in Thyolo district.”

Former Member of Parliament Grace Maseko and long time friend is the bride to be. Mutharika has been a widower for more than 30 years. The statement issued by State House Press Officer Chikondi Juma brings to rest speculation about Mutharika’s marital status whilst in State House. In 2012 an article appearing in a Malawian publication the “Nyasa Times” claims to have had fore-knowledge of Peter Mutharika’s intended secret wedding to a woman from Benin Republic which was to take place on April 7^th 2012 but was thwarted by his brother’s death the then Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika.

Mutharika declined to comment on the rumours and publication saying he was mourning his brother. Anger and disappoint was felt across the spectrum of supporters and ordinary Malawians when the popularly held notion that Mutharika would eventually marry Grace Maseko was dashed.

Mutharika whose late wife died of cancer, has three grown children and grandchildren. He has been linked to several women including lawmaker Anna Kachiko, Presidential advisor Bessie Chirambo, Wilsa-Malawi’s Seodi White-Munthali and Annie’s Lodge’s Annie Fletcher.
