LCC establishes crack team on illegal waste disposal

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has gone a gear up on its waste management enforcement in the Central Business District (CBD), arresting and prosecuting five individuals for illegal disposal of garbage.

LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba says the Council, working with the Zambia Police Service, has launched targeted operations to curb the rising cases of indiscriminate waste disposal.

“We have observed an increase in improper waste disposal within the CBD, and as a Council, we will not tolerate this behaviour,” Mwamba said.

“Our joint enforcement teams are arresting and detaining offenders who violate waste management regulations.”

She added that the offenders who were recently apprehended have already been prosecuted and are currently serving community service under the Council’s supervision.

Beyond enforcement, the Council has also heightened public health education initiatives.

Mwamba said LCC’s Public Health Educators are conducting awareness campaigns to inform residents about proper waste disposal, hygiene practices, and the prevention of waterborne diseases such as cholera.

“At the same time, the Council is carrying out both day and night cleaning exercises across the city under the direct supervision of the Town Clerk, Eng. Liftery Ndaba,” she said.

As part of broader waste management reforms, the Council has engaged 24 franchise contractors to service low-density areas, including Kabulonga and Woodlands.

Residents in these areas have been urged to register with authorised waste collectors.

In high-density communities, LCC has empowered Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) to take charge of waste collection, supporting a community-driven approach to city cleanliness.

Mwamba appealed to the public to join the ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy environment.

“We are urging all Lusaka residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal and to work with us in keeping our city clean and disease-free,” she said. Smart Eagles
