The Zambia Police Service has arrested several in connection with the recent attacks of cops at the local station.

Members of the police service raided Kamwaza and Joweni villages in the early hours on Thursday and made the arrests.

Last week, nine police officers were left seriously injured after a mob attacked them in Kamwaza village in Katete District, Eastern Province.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale said the nine police officers were admitted to Saint Francis Mission Hospital in Katete District but that seven of them have been discharged while two are still admitted in hospital.

He said initial investigations by police revealed that the Headman was protecting two suspects, who are alleged to have been involved in the suspected murder of a man only identified as Kusenseyo in Chieftainess Kawaza’s area on October 6.

The Deputy Police Spokesperson said members of the public apprehended the suspects and handed them over to Police.

Mwale added that police however released the suspects on November 14, due to lack of evidence which incensed some members of Kawaza Village who resorted to damaging the Headman’s and the suspects’ houses.

He said some members of the village also accused the Headman identified as Chinzu of practicing witchcraft.
