‘General’ Kanene maybe in jail but his music talent seems to be too big to be confined to Lusaka Central Prison, popularly known as Chimbokaila.

Last Friday, Kanene whose real name is Clifford Dimba left prison immaculately dressed for “special duties” in Kabwe.

The Zambia Prison Service had assigned the incarcerated singer with the responsibility of entertaining guests at their annual ball held at Philip Sinyangwe Tennis Club.

When the Lusaka High Court slapped Kanene with an 18-year sentence for defilement, it seemed that the curtains had closed on the singer’s music; well not any more.

When he was called to the stage, the guests for commissioner of Prisons, Percy Chato thought it was a joke, but there he was, immaculately dressed in a red silk suit.

When Kanene who has become an anti-defilement and gender-based violence ambassador started dropping his songs, members of the audience were visibly excited.

Among those in attendance were Minister of Home Affairs Davies Mwila, Central Province permanent secretary Edwidge Mutale, Zambia National Service commandant Alick Kamiji and Zambia Army Deputy commander, Topply Lubaya who later took time to dance to Kanene’s music.

Some of the songs that Kanene sang were Boma, Lamulo and Freedom in which he stressed the need for good citizenship.
The evergreen Amayenge were also on hand to entertain the people with their trendy songs.

And Patrick Salubusa (Saulosi) punctuated the annual event with his shanty compounds (komboni) versus plush compounds (mayard) rib-cracking stories.
