AFRINET supports ECZ’s online registration, voters’ roll replacement

The Inter-Africa Governance Network (AFRINET) says it has noted with dismay the protracted mistrust and casting of aspersions on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) by some political parties.

The organisation says it is its belief that ECZ’s intentions are not evil, but, in line with international best practices.

AFRINET Executive Director Maurice Malambo says his institution held a meeting with ECZ and finds no reasons to object on-line Voter Registration and the replacement of the current Voter Register with a new one for the 2021 General Election.

This also comes at the time a number of electoral stakeholders and opposition parties are blaming the ECZ for trying to rig the elections on behalf of the ruling PF party.

The parties say the electoral body is trying to bar a number of citizens from voting next year, saying it has no capacity to register all the eligible voters in the country, in a limited period which has further been undermined by the covid-19 pandemic.

These stakeholders are saying the ECZ would have rather updated the existing voters’ roll as oposed to replacing it within a period of only a month.
