Zimbabwe to arrest foreigners in retail business

The government in Zimbabwe has warned that from the beginning of next year, foreigners who run businesses in retail, farming and many other sectors of the economy will be arrested.

Hairdressers, bakers and transport workers are among those affected. The economic empowerment secretary George Magosvongwe said Zimbabweans were being identified to take over the businesses to prevent shortages.

The BBC correspondent in Zimbabwe says there is growing concern about the influx of traders from Nigeria and China. Indigenisation of the economy was one of the Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe’s main campaign themes in this year’s election.
