Zesco United hit Mufulira Blackpool for five

Jesse Jackson Were scored four goals as Zesco United demolished promoted Mufulira Blackpool 5-0 in a week-8 match played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday.

The Kenyan international followed up his midweek double against Napsa Stars with a devastating performance, scoring 2 in each half, to take his tally to 7 goals this season. Clatous Chama netted the other goal for the league champions.

The victory took George Lwandamina’s men to 15 points from five matches, a point adrift of leaders Nkana who host Lusaka Dynamos on Sunday and have played one match more.

Zesco dominated the match from the onset and could have taken the lead on a couple of occasions early on but were denied by a combination of great goalkeeping and poor finishing.

The Ndola giants finally broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, as Were headed home a John Ching’andu cross despite the best efforts of Blackpool goalkeeper Jimmy Siamvundu.

Were thought he had scored his second four minutes later after he raced through on goal before blasting into the roof of the net from a tight angle but the linesman raised his flag for offside. Replays, however, showed that he was well onside when receiving a Ching’andu pass.

Zesco continued to pile on the pressure and were duly rewarded in the 32nd minute, as Chama latched onto Jackson Mwanza’s measured pass before rounding the keeper and slotting into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Blackpool were struggling to cope with the pace, movement and skill of the Zesco forward line and fell further behind as Were notched his second. The impressive Chama skipped past a challenge and threaded a neat through ball into the path of Were who drilled a first-time shot into the bottom corner.

Were completed his hat trick 12 minutes into the second half and it was a goal of the highest quality. A slick one-touch move involving Chama, substitute Maybin Mwaba and Were ended with the striker expertly firing past a dazed Sianvundu.

The red-hot forward scored his fourth and Zesco’s fifth three minute later following another flowing move, turning sharply before nonchalantly rolling the ball into the net with keeper Siamvundu rooted to the spot. Were becomes the first player in four and a half years to score four goals in a single league match.

Zesco then saw out the rest of the match comfortably as they maintained their perfect record for the season.
