ZESCO reduces residential power supply to 3 hours

The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has reduced power supply to 3 hours for residentials in new power rationing schedule.

In a press statement, ZESCO attributed the reduction to power generation challenges.

The country is facing serious power challenges owing to a number of factors including low water levels at Kariba Dam.

Be that as it may, ZESCO encourages net metering as a key to reliable power and a greener Zambia.

In a bid to strengthen the country’s electricity supply and empower consumers, ZESCO says it is actively encouraging customers to adopt Net Metering, a program that is already showing significant promise.

The push was highlighted during a presentation by the ZESCO Senior Regional Manager – Kitwe, Eng. Clement Twenda at the 2025 Copperbelt Summit and Expo under the theme ‘ Harnessing Sustainability Growth’, which was held at Garden Court in Kitwe, on Thursday, 30 October 2025.

Addressing the pressing challenges facing the energy sector, Eng. Twenda pointed to climate change as a major disruptor of Zambia’s power supply. In response, he outlined Net Metering as one of the solutions that benefits both prosumers (customers) and ZESCO.

Eng. Twenda said that 340 prosumers, comprising both residential and commercial users, have already registered for net metering.

This growing participation has resulted in an installed capacity of 14MW of solar power being fed back into the ZESCO grid for redistribution to other consumers.

He said that “This not only helps individual customers but also adds valuable capacity to the national grid, especially during peak demand periods.”

In closing the session, the ZESCO Divisional Manager – Ndola, Eng. Kennedy Muchanga, encouraged delegates and customers to adopt solar solutions and expressed eagerness to see more customers connect to Net Metering, contributing to the national development of the country.
