ZESCO is taking Zambian’s for a fools ride. We recall far worse droughts when people were eating grass just in last decade. Why didn’t we have power shortages then? The problem is much bigger than rainfall Patterns. The problem is Corruption. Niza Phiri told journalists in lusaka yesterday. Last year when I visited kafue gorge, I was availed with information that new turbines were supposed to be installed that would increase the output by about 180 Megawatts. A chinese company was to oversee the installation and this would ensure that loadsheding was a thing of the past. To my surprise loadshedding is at an all time high because allegedly, from my Colleagues working for Zesco, the turbines installed are smaller than the turbines that were previously there. Niza Phiri , an electrical/Mechanical engineer by profession, went on to say, that kafue gorge, being Zambia’s main generation station even had standby generator units that, even at the worst times. ZESCO had capacity to generate reasonably sufficient energy to supply the country with the old turbines. It seems Corruption led to ZESCO purchasing substandard equipment that is plunging this country into such mediocrity. The government should engage the ACC in establishing the truth behind this and most importantly the solution to the problem because with these turbines? Loadshedding is here to stay. Niza Phiri the 24 year old munali constituency aspiring candidate has added his voice to the many Engineers and Politicians who have ridiculed zesco’s use of rainfall patterns as silly excuses to cover up their stinking corruption.
The problem with us “most Zambians is that we are so stupid”,corruption is killing us based on a few stupid people who tend to benefit. These guys “ZESCO” came up with a good expensive project and after it was approved went for a fake cheap project. Much of the money was diverted. Instead of an upgrade we have downgrade. HH spoke about this but it was assumed he was being political and tribal. We had Mangande as Minister of finance and he did a good job but people will judge him based on tribe. Please Zambians lets stand up for our Zambia. Next this Country will be sold and you will have nowhere to go.
I totally agree with Engineer Niza Phiri. In the late 1970s during the infamous compulsory Zambia National Service training, I was one of the Form 5 students who guarded the utility’s property at Kafue Gorge and persoñally, I know how the Yugoslavs built that investment from the upper deck to tunnels 1,2 and 3 which is the main generating tunnel. I also know that there is a 10 kilometer man-made tunnel that feeds tunnel 3 in times like this. At the start of this tunnel, ZESCO can literary shut down the Kafue River and divert its waters to turn the turbines at tunnel 3. Having said that, one would ask whether Zimbabwe, whom we share the same facilities at Kariba Dam is facing the problems that Zambia is facing. Secondly, I hear we are now importing power from Mozambique. Isn’t Mozambique generating power from the same Zambezi waters at Cabora Basa Dam. Thirdly, can ZESCO explain to the suffering Zambians why Itezhi tezhi Dam was built if was not to reserve the Kafue River waters for that dry day. This is why I totally agree with Engineer PHIRI. It’s all about corruption, nepotism, maladministration and most of all lies from ZESCO and the government of the day.

ZESCO has a much bigger problem than drought.If they dont answer Niza then we should all believe Niza that corruption in ZESCO is what is putting Zambia in loadshedding. We have so many power stations and only 14 million people. How can we be loadshedding?

The boy is right iwe Observer. We have had droughts but loadshedding was never there. He is asking very pertinent questions.ZESCO should answer not you or are you a PF plant?
