Zambia’s Main Opposition Alliance Gives Police 24-Hour Ultimatum Over Political Violence

Zambia’s main opposition coalition, the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance, has given the country’s police a 24-hour ultimatum to arrest individuals it alleges are behind recent incidents of political violence ahead of next month’s general elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, the Alliance’s Chairman for Presidential Affairs, Binwell Mpundu, called on law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against what he described as “sponsored cadres” allegedly involved in attacks on opposition supporters.

Mpundu warned that failure to enforce the law impartially could undermine public confidence in the electoral process as the country heads to the polls on 13 August 2026.

The statement comes amid growing concerns over reports of election-related violence in parts of Zambia, with political parties and civil society organisations urging authorities to ensure campaigns remain peaceful and that those responsible for any acts of violence are held accountable.

Zambia is preparing for a closely contested presidential election between the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), led by President Hakainde Hichilema, and the opposition NRP-UP ticket of Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu, backed by the Tonse Pamodzi Alliance.
