Former Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) Marketing & Public Relations Manager, Edwin Phiri (pictured), has been awarded Fellowship of the United Kingdom based Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), reports Thom Shonga for Zambia Eye.

Phiri who has vast experience in marketing spanning almost two decades was last week elected Fellow of CIM.

The Chartered Marketer, who moved to the UK in 2002, is subject leader for marketing in the school of business and science and also a senior lecturer and course director at the University of the Arts London, which is the largest institution of its kind in Europe.

Phiri, once described as “perhaps one of Zambia’s best marketing brains” felt immensely proud that his contribution to the field of Marketing has now been internationally recognised by his peers through the world’s largest institution of marketing professionals and marketing practice.

The CIM is the world’s largest body of professional marketers and is the only marketing institute in the world that confers chartered status to eligible members.

“It just feels good to be recognised at the highest level by your peers and the world’s largest marketing institution of which I have been a member for over fifteen years,” an elated Phiri said.

Phiri, who boasts of a number of marketing and public relations qualifications, also scored Zambia’s first in 1995 when he received a medal for a world record best student award for the Public Relations course on the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) exam.

Asked how this could have come about, Phiri replied by listing a number of key activities.

“I have enriched my practise by having a well balanced portfolio of roles,” explained Phiri.

“My expertise and experience include teaching across different study formats from further education, undergraduate, honours and post-graduate, developing, delivery of custom-made corporate in-house training and delivering intensive and short-term courses,” said Phiri who has been a Chartered Marketer since 1998.

“I am also an active researcher with research interest centred on strategy management and marketing that informs my practice greatly. I have also undertaken national and international projects externally funded by organisation like the British Council and United Kingdom Trade Initiative,” explained Phiri.

Phiri has presented marketing papers at international conferences in America, Columbia, France, India, Japan and Malaysia.

“I also regularly write and deliver papers at local and international conferences that have included the UK, Japan, the USA, India, Colombia and France,” Phiri continued to explain on how he was conferred the Fellowship of Marketing.

Before going academic, Phiri worked for a number of companies including British Gas (UK), Telecel (Zambia) and Toyota (Zambia).

Phiri will later this year visit Zambia where he will host a training workshop on the innovative application of social media for business houses.
