Zambia-celebrateZambia edged Tanzania 6-5 on post-match penalties to win Bronze at the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup following a 1-1 deadlock in regulation time in the third place play-off match played at Nyayo Stadium on Thursday.

After a goalless first half Ronald Kampamba gave Zambia the lead in the 51st minute before Mbwana Samata brought matters level in the 64th minute.

Zambia goalkeeper Joshua Titima was the match winner after keeping out penalties from Haruna Chanongo, Mrisho Ngasa and Kelvin Yondani.

Apart from Kondwani Mtonga and Justin Zulu who missed their spot kicks Felix Katongo, Ronald Kampamba, Bronson Chama, Julius Situmbeko and Kabaso Chongo were all clinical from the spot.

Tanzania scored their spot kicks through Mbwana Samata, Erasto Edward Nyoni, Himid Mao, Kiemba Ramadhan and Singano Ramadhan.

Zambia coach Patrice Beaumelle celebrated the win with his players and told that he was happy with the outcome.

“I am very happy with the boys because we scored a beautiful goal although we were not strong enough to hold on to our lead. Tanzania have very good forwards and we had to be careful. But at the end of the day the match went to penalties which were a 50-50 affair,” said Beaumelle.

“We have to work on how to manage the game when we are leading. It was not the first time Tanzania came back against us; in the group stage we scored first but Tanzania equalised, in the semi-final we were leading against Sudan and we lost. Today we opened the scoring but Tanzania equalised and we won the match on penalties.

“We have to work hard and be more disciplined to hold the ball when we are leading. But I am very proud of what we have achieved here because we only used local players for some of whom this was the first time to play at this level,” he said.

Tanzania coached Kim Poulsen rued the two chancesby Morad Said and Mbwana Samata that were kept out by Joshua Titima in the first half.

“We had some good chances in the match. In the first have we had two very big chances; but when you go into penalties anything can happen. We are disappointed but we have played six good games with our new team at the Cecafa,” Poulsen said. / Courtesy of FAZ
