Zambia under threat of Ebola outbreak – WHO

The World Health Organization says the many refugees that Zambia hosts from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo puts the country at risk of the Ebola virus.

Who Country Representative Dr. Nathan Bakyaita says the influx of refugees fleeing DRC has put the country at high risk of a possible Ebola outbreak.

Speaking This Morning at the Ministry Of Health-Zambia National Public Health Institute “Ebola preparedness and response training” in Ndola, Dr. Bakyaita however said the global body will continue to work with partners and the government to see how this threat be addressed and prevent any cases of Ebola.

Speaking earlier, Copperbelt Provincial Medical Director, Dr Alex Makupe said the long porous border with the DRC is posing a serious concern of Ebola outbreak but however said Copperbelt province has a committed team that is able to address any threats of Ebola.

Over 122 cases of Ebola were recorded in Congo with 84 fatalities, a situation which has led the provincial medical team to start conducting screening services to travelers in border areas.
