As a passionate wellness activist I conduct wellness days aimed at assisting organizations work towards the following goals;
- Reducing health related absenteeism and underperformance
- Substantially lowering health related costs
- Improving productivity by creating and maintaining a healthy workforce
Chronic illnesses, especially diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, and cancer, are rapidly becoming key human resource issues. Many intellectually sound individuals perform below potential and are forced to take sick leave due to various chronic illnesses and stress.
Another area of concern is that there has been an increase in the prevalence of cases where people who are infected with HIV also have coexisting chronic conditions especially diabetes and high blood pressure. This co-occurrence poses serious health hazards because there is more than one major disease a person has to deal with. And healthy habits can successfully avoid and manage such situations.
Chronic illnesses are highly avoidable and manageable through a healthy lifestyle. Relying exclusively on conventional medicine to treat chronic illnesses without correcting the bad habits that cause or contribute to these diseases can be counterproductive. Moreover, conventional medicine offers little preventative measures to keep the healthy workforce from developing chronic illnesses in future.
I particularly cite the rural African lifestyle of regular exercise, unprocessed foods, mostly plant based diet, and strong social ties as a viable solution for chronic illnesses.
Wellness day activities include;
- Workshops, presentations or speeches covering
– The nature of different chronic illnesses and how they are connected to diet, exercise and other habits
– How to prevent and manage chronic diseases through lifestyle changes like proper diet and exercise
– Insight into health benefits of indigenous foods and diets.
– Habits that increase the risk of chronic illnesses
– Symptoms and complications of different chronic conditions
– Health hazards associated with the coexistence of HIV and non communicable chronic illnesses
· Healthy food, mainly indigenous Zambian cuisine
- Screening for vital indicators of wellbeing; blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol ratio, triglycerides levels, waist size, and fitness level.
· Recommending necessary changes that can be made in a workplace to create a culture of wellness and an environment that promotes wellness.
I also speak at churches, conferences, workshops, and different kinds of events
