United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says once comes into office as Republican President, his administration will repeal the Cyber Security and Crime Bill which was signed into law yesterday.

President Edgar Lungu signed the Bill yesterday to become law. Some provisions of the bill include monitoring and interception of electronic communication as well as any other information using the internet, and punish culprits.

The bill has also provided for the establishment of a Central Monitoring and Coordination Center through which intercepted communication and call-related information will be forwarded.

According to the government, the introduction of the cybersecurity law is meant to promote the responsible use of social media platforms as well as ensure the provision of cybersecurity in the country, but critics say it will be used to suppress citizens’ freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, Hichilema says the law is draconian and his administration will reverse the law once it gets into power.

He writes:

A new law has been signed primarily meant to curtail your freedom of speech and association.

This is yet another reason why we need change on 12th August. What has been taken away from us is part of our God given human right.

Once in power later this year, among our first actions, is to repeal this draconian law and restore your freedoms.

We know it’s going to be a tough time ahead but hope and help is on the way in the next few months.
