Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba says he traveled to Zimbabwe on Wednesday with Patriotic Front presidential candidate Edgar Lungu and had a meeting with President Robert Mugabe.

Kalaba says their meeting with the Zimbabwean Leader had nothing to do with soliciting for funds for campaigns for Lungu as reported in the press. He says the meeting was important in many respects including the fact that as chairperson of SADC, President Mugabe was assured that the elections shall be held in a free and fair environment. Through him the rest of the member states shall accordingly be assured Kalaba says.

The Zambian Foreign Minister who is said to have travelled without informing the Zambian Acting President Guy Scott says their meeting with President Mugabe, a close ally of late President Michael Sata was important as a neighbour and assured the people in that country that peace shall prevail.

” Allow me to dispel some reports you may have read in the media. During the meeting, the issue of funding for the PF was never discussed. I wish to confirm that the PF has received and continues to receive support from local well wishers. The need for external help in this regard will not arise,” said Kalaba in Lusaka at a media briefing on Thursday.

Below is Kalaba’s statement in full:

Yesterday I accompanied the President of the patriotic front, Hon Edgar Lungu to Harare to meet his excellency Dr. Robert Mugabe, President of the republic of Zimbabwe. As you are aware President Mugabe is also the President of ZANU-PF, a sister party to the PF.

The meeting was meant to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to brief each other on their respective just ended part conference and current issues affecting the two parties. As the first contact as respective Party Presidents, the two renewed their commitment to continue cooperating.

President Edgar Lungu took time to brief President Mugabe on the events leading to his election as well as after the elections. He expressed confidence that Zambia’s democracy has matured and that politics have become positively competitive. He assured President Mugabe that unity is returning to the ruling party.

This meeting was important in many respects including the fact that as chairperson of SADC, President Mugabe was assured that the elections shall be held in a free and fair environment. Through him the rest of the member states shall accordingly be assured. As an important neighbour, our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe were also assured as such.

Allow me to dispel some reports you may have read in the media. During the meeting, the issue of funding for the PF was never discussed. I wish to confirm that the PF has received and continues to receive support from local well wishers. The need for external help in this regard will not arise.

The PF has confidence in the electoral system and particularly in the men and women tasked with the duty of managing the electoral commission. I therefore, expect that we should all have this confidence and be ready to accept the outcome of the 20th january, 2015 polls.

But remember that our party went through a sad period of wrangling and we need to demonstrate that the issues are now behind us.

On a lighter note I wish to report that President Mugabe is well and in high spirits and that he conveyed good tidings to the people of Zambia. On behalf of President Lungu and on my own behalf, I again thank President Mugabe for receiving us and taking time to meet us.

  1. The PF Part is panicking. They are fully aware that come 20th January, 2015, they are losing to HH. Edgar Kachasu Chibuku Lungu is dangerously desparate. The man is diabetic and HIV Positive at the same time. And to make the matters worse, the man is a pure Malawian Muslim an affliate of Boko Haram. HH is winning and Kachasu Chibuku Lungu is losing. VIVA HH.

    • Sandra Mutinta, How can you desrcibe your follow being like that?
Should you maginalise someone on account of being diabetic or HIV. This is not different from being tribalistic. Even on alcohol issue, how many of the leaders take alcohol surely? If he is what you say he is, how did he manage to execute all the four dutied that Sata was entrusting him with?
I come from Muchinga province but am as well for HH this time around because I have heard him discuss real issues affecting our country and also given the current happenings in the PF but let us talk about issues not being spiteful against one another.

  2. Edgar Lungu went to Zimbabwe in order to be briefed on how to rig elections. The man is fully aware that only 25% of Zambians love him and 54% love HH. So he is scared of losing an election no wander this desparece. I we chi Kalaba, your Edgar Kachasu Chibuku Lungu cant win the elections, i mean he is not a presidential material.

  5. This was a big PF mistake to associate with Mugabe. Out of this action other SADC countries opposed to Mugabe might even give UPND more money. That is what happens when people are desperate, they make stupid decisions. Just remember that Sata was the only Zambian president, in life and death, to have been visited by one foreign head of state in the name of Mugabe. Ask yourself why other leaders never visited Sata, not even in death
