VP calls for transparency and accountability in COVID-19 donations

Vice President Inonge Wina has urged the Ministry of Health and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to make sure that all donations received from the general public towards COVID-19 are well accounted for.

She has since directed the DMMU National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe and Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Health to publish in the media a schedule of all donations received.

She pointed out that this will build confidence in the Zambian people that the donations received are being used accordingly.

She has further praised the Auditor General for ensuring accountability of all resources received both at DMMU and at the Ministry of Health.

“This includes financial and material donations currently the office of the auditor general has stationed 16 auditors at DMMU and the Ministry of Health to work with internal auditors in ensuring accountability of all donations.” Wina stated.

Meanwhile, her call came at the time there has been concerns as to if the donated materials are being properly used.

Others are of the opinion that the donations are being misappropriated, as they fear that corrupt senior government officials could deep their fingers into the coffers.

Apparently, the German government has donated K370 million towards the fight against coronavirus in country, but was quick to demand accountability.

In a statement after the donation, German ambassador to Zambia, Achim Burkart, said: “We urge the Government of Zambia to uphold human rights and highest standards of accountability and step up Anti-Corruption measures.”
