Copperbelt University Vice Chancellor has dissolved the student’s union leadership and the student council at the institution.

In letter to COBUSU leadership dated 6th December 2017, CBU Vice Chancellor Naison Ngoma said he had observed the lack of leadership during the challenging times when the COBUSU leadership is needed most by the students.

He said the lack of leadership had left a vaccum which was being exploited by some students who do not have the best interest of the university, a situation he said can not be allowed to continue.

The Vice Chancellor has since replaced the union with an interim leadership committee which will be headed by Nelson Mtongoma.

But COBUSU president Njiko Musuku said what the Vice Chancellor has done is illegal and unconstitutional.

He said management wants to dissolve the union because they have been protecting students something he said management was not comfortable with.

He said management wanted to have a union which is compromised so that they would run the institution without any checks and balances from the major  stakeholders who are the students.

He said dissolving of the student leadership is not a solution adding that the Ministry of High Education was made aware of the problems and they chose to run away from matters affecting students.

On Tuesday Night CBU students rioted over delayed meal allowances.

    • Did Lungu appoint Ngoma? Do you know when Ngoma became VC? I do not think Ngoma is a fit but leave ECL out of your nonsense.

      • Ngoma became VC long before Lungu became President so there’s no tribalism or nepotism here. The two even grew up in different places. Lungu was in Chimwemwe Kitwe Ngoma is a Kankoyo boy from Mufulira

  2. Our current Vice Chancellors, CBU and UNZA know nothing about Academic freedom. They have become tools of oppression for the government. Real Vice Chancellors will do everythung possible to protect the students and lecturers’ freedom of expression. A univeristy without academic freedom will only produce fake graduates who can’t research or come up with solutions because their minds are enslaved.
