The opposition UPND after being blocked to hold a rally in Lusaka has now moved to the Copperbelt province.

The opposition party has notified the Police that it’s leaders Hakainde Hichilema and Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba will address a rally in Kitwe on April 8, 2017 which the party expects over 10, 000 people to attend.

According to a letter dated March 27, 2017 to Riverside Police station by the local party leadership, the rally which will start at 10am to 7pm will be held at Changanamai grounds, in Kwacha East.

The rally the UPND say is aimed at thanking people for overwhelming turning up to vote during the 2016 general elections.

  1. Good Move! ZPS has been given more than 7 Days as required per current Law. ZPS has no legal Powers to cancel the Rally unless they can get a High Court injunction.Let HH ,GBM & UPND excercise their Constitutional Rights to Assemble,to Associate and Speak to their Supporters.#Let the Petition be heard in Court without fail.

  4. We pray that the police will act in a professional way now. I know that in their heart they want to serve the people fairly but it’s just that they are scare of being retired on national “intrest” or even being fired. I feel for them sometimes.

  6. Why is it that there are no rallies in USA after elections? Can’t we surely learn from Botswana or Tanzania if USA is too advanced for us?

    • Each country has its own character and tradition. In South Africa opposition parties hold rallies all the time.

    • what have you learnt from those countries concerning perfecting your dwindling economy? Those countries are doing fine whilst you continue going backwards as Zambians.

  8. Without Hearing the UPND Petition there will not be closure to the 2016 Disputed Elections. There is tension and Divisions among Zambians becoz there is still confusion about who won the 2016 Election. This Petition is like a DNA Test. It will set us all free when we know the Truth. Lungu whether he likes it or not the Petition Hearing is his Passport to Recognition or oblivion. The Strategy to force the Petitioners and their Supporters to recognize Lungu will not work. Lungu has to prove that he won the Election. Lungu’s behavior over the last 6 months has confirmed that he lost the Election and stole HH’s Victory Lungu tells us that he won in 6 Provinces and exceeded the 50%+ 1 vote threshold. So why is he refusing to prove this in Court? Lets hear the Petition in Court and the Truth will set us free.

    • The burden lies with the aggrieved party to prove that they won, not with the winner. Lungu cannot go to court to prove anything (besides he has immunity).
Unfortunately there is no petition hearing in any courts of law in Zambia or outside because the Concourt, which is the only court mandated to hear election petitions, has already completed deliberations on this matter when the aggrieved failed to provide any evidence within 14 days.
There is no law which can compel any court to hear anything. Let us just set up a Kangaroo court and see that same evidence, if at all there is any.
For now we just wait for 2021

  9. we need to know that Lungu is there illegally and he would not allow any thing or any move that would threaten his stay in state House . Remember Lungu is a real dictator who is trained by Mugabe . if we treat lungu with kid groves he shall never move from State House . Dictators are very slippery like jelly fish . they will soon start tempering with the constitution and no one will ever raise an alarm for fear of being victimised . This id,,,iots think the country is theirs . God is Watching . The only way to push them out is to do what the constitution requires to do . if the law says we can hold the rally after informing the police let us do it whether they want it or not Let them fill all the police cell with UPND cadres . Aba bafyatile balya umupola . Inshimba ishilanyela mupeto , ikonke nshila . Fundi watumpa alyaimo ashika nobuchinga

  11. Which injunction and from which court? Police don’t need to make any application but it’s within its discretion to issue or withhold a permit. Don’t give these people any permit, this man(HH) just wants blood

  12. PF Bloggers don’t understand Law. To hold a Rally u don’t need a Police Permit. U need to Notify the Police within 7 days b4 the Rally. ZPS has no legal powers to cancel the Rally unless they are granted by the High Court cancelling the Rally. ZPS in this case have to give a valid reason to cancel the Rally and the Organizers of the Rally have got to agree. ZPS made a mess of the Kanyama Rally and taint the image of ZPS and the Country as a whole.ZPS and PF have to repair their image in Kitwe. Another chaotic Rally will prove beyond any doubt that Zambia is now a failed Police State. This is another Test to ZPS and PF. Until the Petition is heard and disposed off there will continue to be tension and disharmony in Zambia.#Let the Petition be heard in Court without further delays so that the Country can move on.

  13. I can remember clearly how the PF was allowed to hold rallies from their defeat in the 2006 polls right up to 2011,by MMD of course with the usual encumberance’s by the PIG..sic..(party in government) but things are now kind a like getting out a hand! Tell us if we’re no longer a Democracy of free citizens entitled to certain liberties..
