The opposition UPND says it will seek audience with the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) following revelations by former PF deputy elections chairperson Kelvin Fube Bwalya, commonly known as KBF, that the mysterious Samuel Chavula, who was caught in the ECZ server room during the disputed 2016 general elections, was in fact a PF agent.

The discovery of Chavula in the server room, a restricted area, during the totaling of election results sparked major controversy and formed part of the basis for the petitioning of the election of Edgar Lungu as President by the losing candidate Hakainde Hichilema.

Chavula’s true identity and the reason for his presence in the server room had remained a mystery since then.
But during a live interview on Prime Television Monday night, Bwalya revealed that Chavula was a PF agent working under the PF elections committee. He however claimed there was nothing sinister about Chavula’s presence in the ECZ server room as other political parties would have done the same thing.

Reacting to the startling revelation, UPND deputy secretary general Patrick Mucheleka commended Bwalya “for his courage and honesty’ in clearing the air over the mystery surrounding Chavula.

“We would like to commend the Former PF Deputy Chairperson for Elections Kelvin Bwalya Fube (KBF) for clearing the air surrounding the mysterious Samuel Chavula who was found in the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) restricted server room at the Mulungushi tallying centre during the 2016 elections,” Mucheleka said in a statement today.

“During the live Prime television show last night, KBF admitted that Samuel Chavula was a PF agent working under the PF elections committee. The PF had always denied this.

“He further told the nation that other political parties would have done the same thing. Now this is a startling revelation coming from a horse’s mouth and we have no reason to doubt these assertions and can only admire him for his courage and honesty in clearing the air over this long standing issue. KBF has without doubt set the record straight and in the process has vindicated our long held view over this matter.”

Mucheleka stated that following Bwalya’s revelations, his party will now engage ECZ to seek further clarification as to why they never gave the same opportunity to the UPND and other political parties to similarly place their own IT specialists in what was said to be a restricted area.

He added that the UPND also want to seek clarification from the ECZ as to why they allowed Chavula to access the restricted ECZ data area with fake identities and yet he was still permitted to use their computers.

“We shall demand answers from the ECZ on these serious issues as we have always insisted that the playing field was not fair and heavily manipulated to advantage the PF leadership with the aid of the ECZ.

“This is should not be dismissed as water under the bridge by the PF surrogates because this disclosure by Kelvin Fube Bwalya is current, and therefore profoundly awakens new questions over an issue that has never been resolved to its logical conclusion,” said Mucheleka.
