UPND accuses Police of wanting to keep HH and other leaders in custody

The United Party for National Development (UPND) is accusing the Police of wanting to keep its leader Hakainde Hichilema in custody.

Hichilema with over two UPND leaders were arrested on Tuesday charged and detained in connection with the killing of a PF Monze official Harrison Chanda on Monday night.

Hichilema was scheduled to appear in court at 11:00 hours today February 27 2013 but could not.

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has accused the police in Livingstone of U-turning on the decision to let Hichilema appear in court today.

Mweetwa said the police had said yesterday that the case would be in court at 11:00 hours on Wednesday but had instead told his lawyers that they could not hold his case within Livingstone but would have to do it from outside the City.

Mweetwa said the Police had even refused to give Hichilema a Police bond. He wondered why the police had even decided to shift the hearing to another town saying it had since become clear that the police had a plan to continue holding the UPND leadership in the custody in order to try and disadvantage the UPND in the by elections.

But Southern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga told Journalists that the opposition leader could not appear in court because preparation of the paper work by the police had not yet been completed.

Katanga said Hichilema would however be able to appear in court later today once the paper work was done but if not then the case will have to be rescheduled to tomorrow.

She said the same was also applicable to the two MPs, Mazabuka Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo and his Kalomo counterpart Request Muntanga as well as the 25 other UPND members who were arrested for the same offense.

Katanga has meanwhile said that Livingstone city has since retained to normal and people were going about their business normally.
